The areola and nipple are reconstructed at a later breast reconstruction surgery which does not require hospitalization.
The areola can be reconstructed by a tattoo or using a skin graft from the groin, as this skin is darker than other body ones and it is therefore easier to hide the scar.
In nipple reconstruction the skin of the breast can be used, making a local plasty, or also the contralateral hemi-nipple can be implanted.
